HOW REGIONAL DOES THE CITY OF FREIBURG EAT?

The question „How regional does Freiburg feed itself?” is really important for the Agronauten since a long time. All the better that this question has now been analysed in a research for the first time in Germany – with advisory activity of the Agronauten. The research “Regional consumption Freiburg”, that was undertaken from the Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau (FiBL) for the city of Freiburg can be found here  in German for downloading.

It examines the proportion of regional products of the total consumption of the city Freiburg. This was not easy because of our non-transparent, globalised food system. The results were pretty disappointing:

-It is difficult to get reliable data and most of the supermarkets do not want to share their numbers

-Through a process of triangulation estimates could be developed: The total share of regional produce for Freiburgs consumption lies around 20%

-Fruit (8%) and vegetables (13%) are at a very low level
